A talk by Joel Kovel, Activist, Professor of Social
Studies at Bard College, and author of several books, most recently
The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or The End of the World
(Zed Books, 2002)
Ecology is the broad study of the relationships between organisms
and their environments. This includes the interactions of living
organisms--including human beings--with one another and with their
non-living surroundings, the flow of matter and energy in environments,
and the structure and functions of nature. The world's ecology is
in more danger now than ever before. Looking at the ecological crisis
within the context of current world affairs, such as war, imperialism,
and the 2004 election, Kovel will survey our situation and explain
his assessment of the need for radical change. The talk will look
at the current ecological crisis as a catastrophe of our entire
civilization, and the many changes necessary to overcome it.
